Season 5 | Episode 9 | Aired June 7, 2015
****WARNING: This post contains MAJOR spoilers for last night’s episode of Game of Thrones! If you haven’t seen it yet don’t read!****
Remember a few weeks ago when I went on and on about that adorable moment between Stannis and Shireen and even said he might not make such a bad king after all? I RETRACT ALL OF THAT!
I heard the rumors of what might happen, but after Stannis told Melissandra no, I thought that was it, we were done with the issue. However, it was obvious what was going to happen last night from the first moment we saw Stannis and his army slowly freezing half way between The Wall and Winterfell.
Stannis has been determined to become king from the moment Robert died, but last night we saw that he will literally do anything to make that happen when he allowed his daughter, Shireen, to be burned at the stake as a sacrifice to the Lord of Light. I am so angry!
Shireen was so sweet and she loved her father so much and just wanted to help him become king. She had no idea what was going to happen until the guards were suddenly picking her up and tying her to pyre.
I don’t want to see Davos’s reaction when he learns Shireen is dead. He definitely knew what was going to happen, after all, he was the who helped Gendry escape before they sacrifice him (speaking of which: where is Gendry? Is he still floating in the middle of the sea?). If it’s anything like Shireen’s mother, who was surprisingly heartbroken considering how much hate she’s had for her daughter so far, I will not be able to handle it.
Do you know how many episodes Shireen was in? Ten. The equivalent of one season out of five. And yet, she was one of my favourites. I made the mistake of liking a character and they paid for it with their life.
Several other things happened last night. Jon arrived back at The Wall with the Wildlings and for a moment I thought the others at The Wall weren’t going to let them in. Thankfully they did and everyone seemed to be amazed by the giant now in their midst. Alliser tells Jon that he has a good heart and that this will get him killed. Given what happened last week and given that next week is the finale, I’m a little concerned now about who might die.
We also saw Arya who should’ve been completing her mission down on the docks last night. Instead, she saw someone she once knew. At first I thought it was going to be Gendry and I was very excited. Instead, it’s Mace Tyrell and Meryn Trant, the latter of him Arya spies on in a brothel where he’s getting the youngest girl possible to be with. I think we all see where this is going and it’s terrifying.
In Dorne the Martells agree to let Jaime and Bronn leave and to take Myrcella with them. On the condition that they bring Trystane with them. They agree, and despite Ellaria trying to make amends, I have a feeling the dangers aren’t over yet. Especially since they’re about to return to King’s Landing and find out that Cersei has been locked up.
If they get back and the High Sparrow arrests Jaime then technically that means it’ll come out that Tommen and Myrcella are bastards, right? Which means Tommen will no longer be king and who knows what will happen with Myrcella and Trystane. Everything is a mess.
Finally, Meereen. Once again Dany is overseeing an event in the Fighting Pits. Jorah ends up participating in one of the fights and walks away the victor. Everything seems to be going fine, until Jorah fires a spear into the crowd, killing one of the Sons of the Harpy who was sneaking up to kill Dany.
Sons of the Harpy appear all throughout the crowd and begin killing people. Jorah helps Dany to try and escape, along with Tyrion, Missandei, and Daario. Just when it seems like they’re trapped, Drogon appears and begins killing the Sons of the Harpy (and a few unfortunate bystanders). I was so excited when the dragon flew over and stadium. After seeing him a couple episodes ago I knew he’d be back soon so I’m really glad it was to protect Dany.
In the end, Dany ends up climbing on his back and they fly off. I was a little confused by this cause, yeah great, she’s safe, but sorry Tyrion, Jorah, and the others, look after yourselves! She just left them there! I’m assuming there was a plan somewhere in her head otherwise things are going to go downhill really quickly.
So, a lot of death last night. I’m guessing that since next week is the finale we’ll see ever more. Maybe the start of the war?
What did you think of last night’s episode? Predictions for the finale?
