The Walking Dead Top 10 Fave Episodes Countdown: #2

Consumed

“Consumed” is episode five of season six and is number two on my list. This one was one of the hardest to place and I switched this one and tomorrow’s one about a million times because I couldn’t decide which one should be number one or number two.

Eventually I settled on “Consumed” as number two, but it’s a very loose two.

“Consumed” is, in my opinion, one of the best episodes in the whole series. The episode follows Daryl and Carol after they have followed the car with the white cross on it all the way into Atlanta where they meet Noah and discover where Beth is being held.

If “Still” was number three because I loved the friendship between Daryl and Beth, you can probably guess why I love this one. Daryl and Carol’s relationship is one of my absolute favourite things on this show (how many times have I said that in this countdown?).

They both have such dark pasts and I think they’re two characters whose lives actually improved in some ways after the world ended. Every character on the show has so many layers, but have an easier time of showing it and revealing things while these two are so complex and hold back so much.

All throughout this episode we see little things and learn little bits about both these characters and it’s great because it happens at the same time they’re learning things about each other.

When they find shelter Carol reveals that it was a shelter she and Sophia stayed at once to get away from Ed. Also while they’re there, Daryl finds a book about surviving childhood abuse and it is later revealed to Carol and viewers that he kept it.

While we already knew both of them had dealt with abuse in the past, but these little details about how they each dealt with it really add more dimensions to the characters.

While there were so many times in this episode where the true extent of their relationship was show from burning the walkers bodies to the moment in the van before it fell, there is one moment in particular that stands out to me.

Just before they see the van and are in the office building and Carol tells Daryl he doesn’t know her. He then responds with, “keep telling yourself that”.

It’s two short lines, but I feel like this pretty much encompasses their whole relationship because they do know each, probably better than anyone else in the group and maybe even each other. But they’re so used to hiding from people that the idea of someone else knowing anything about them is foreign.

Daryl and Carol are two of the best characters on this show and definitely two of the most badass. They’ve both evolved so much since the first season and it’s crazy now to go back and watch those first few episodes and see how much things have changed.

“Consumed”, like “Still”, is an episode I watch over and over again. It focuses mainly on only two characters, but it’s so complex and so non-stop that you’re never bored and you desperately want to know what happens next.

I’m incredibly excited to see what next season will bring for these two amazing characters.

What did you think of “Consumed”?
