The Walking Dead Episode Review: “Now”

The Walking Dead

Season 6 | Episode 5 | Aired: November 8, 2015

I loved this episode! We were back in Alexandria, it was gross, and we saw a lot of development for a lot of the characters. I don’t even know where to start!

Alright, we have to start somewhere so lets start with Jessie! Everyone knows I’ve never been Jessie’s biggest fan, but these past few episodes… She’s becoming a serious badass and I love it so much.

Alexandra Breckenridge was amazing this episode and portrayed every emotion perfectly from Jessie’s attempt to get Sam to come upstairs to killing Walker Betsy, every emotion was clear and heartbreaking and she just did such a wonderful job.

I’m going to continue with the Anderson family for a moment because Ron and Sam and really on opposite ends of how they’re dealing with things.

Ron is still pretty angry about everything, but we saw him offering to help Rick out and ‘looking out for’ Carl. I still only trust Ron as far as I can throw him and really don’t know what to think about his sudden helpfulness, but I think we can assume for now that he has an ulterior motive.

Ron and Rick

As for Sam, poor Sam. I just felt so bad for him! While Ron is dealing with everything that happened by getting angry, Sam’s too terrified to even go downstairs in his own house. Why? Because he knows what happened down there, but if he stays upstairs he’s safe because nothing changed upstairs.

I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him everything would be okay. He looked so sad!

You know who else looked sad? Aaron. Oh my gosh I wanted to give him a hug too. He feels so much guilt over the Wolves finding them and he desperately tries to make up for it by helping Maggie when she wants to go and look for Glenn.

Seeing Maggie and Aaron individually makes me incredibly sad right now so seeing them together basically just had me wanting to cry for every one of their scenes. But oh man, Lauren Cohen.

This cast does an amazing job every week, but there are always a couple members of the cast who seem to stand out the most in each episode and Lauren Cohen did a phenomenal job in “Now”.

At the moment we know about as much as she does in regards to Glenn. Some think he’s dead, some think he’s alive, we just don’t know and neither does she which is really what’s killing her. All she wants is to know if he’s alive or dead because then she can deal with it and move forward, but she can’t handle not knowing. Especially because (MAJOR SPOILERS) she’s pregnant.

Maggie

I haven’t gotten that far in the comics yet, but I think many people, even those who haven’t read the comics were thinking that’s what would happen. And it did. Maggie is pregnant, we don’t know what’s going on with Glenn, but on the plus side, Aaron got Maggie to laugh a little when he suggested she name the baby Aaron/Erin.

Seriously, his friendship with Team Family is adorable and I love it.

Aaron or Erin

Alright, what else should we talk about? Deanna! She was pretty badass last week when she killed that walker. I mean sure, after that she seemed to be losing her mind and I’m a little worried she’s going to get more people killed, but hey, she’s trying.

Someone who I thought was trying, but maybe not so much was Spencer. He seemed to be trying to hold Alexandria together and do what his mother couldn’t right then because she was still processing everything. Then he stole some food and alcohol from Alexandria’s storage and got drunk.

*Slow clap for Spencer*

Seriously dude? You didn’t remember to close the gate last season while you were sober, should you really be drinking?

He’s also a mean drunk (everyone in Alexandria is a mean drunk, why do they still have alcohol there?) and he had it out with Deanna, blaming her for everything that had happened to them.

Spencer and Deanna

At the end of the episode he’s up in the watch tower and as Deanna (who is slowly losing her mind) walks past it we see blood on the wall. Now, a lot of people thought it might be oozing through from the walkers on the other side, but I’m more wondering if Spencer did something stupid while he was up in that tower.

He was looking down on the walkers like he wanted to throw himself over the wall so I’m really curious to see what happened there.

Something quite pivotal happened last week which was Deanna handing over the figurative keys of Alexandria to Rick. Rick says they still need Deanna to lead, but she disagrees and says the people need him. If they would work together to lead the town then it would be perfect. Alone I’m not sure either of them are stable enough to lead anything.

It’ll be interesting to see what happens now the Ricktatorship has officially begun.

Something else major and adorable happened last week! Tara and Denise kissed! Yes, I was so excited hence the exclamation marks!

Tara and Eugene

When we first met Denise I was kind of like, ‘meh’ and I was just desperately hoping they didn’t hook her up with Eugene (sorry Eugene), but having her with Tara is adorable and wonderful and their moments in this episode were so cute. I can’t wait to see where these two go next and what the writers have in store for them (please don’t kill them).

There was another kiss last week, but before I get to that I want to talk about the domestic between the two kids of those people who kissed.

Carl and Ron finally got into an actual physical fight last week. I say finally because with everything that’s happened so far it was kind of building to that, but I’m not going to lie, it was kind of a pathetic fight.

I didn’t expect much from Ron since he’s been living inside the walls and I doubt gotten into too many fistfights with the other teens in Alexandria. But Carl’s supposed to be a tough guy, taking down walkers and people since he was ten.

Ron and Carl fight

They literally just slapped each other a couple times. Like, they shoved each other and waved their arms at each other and that was it. Come on boys! Your dads went through a window when they fought, at least mess up each other’s hair or something.

Ah well, maybe we’ll see that next when the boys find out their parents kissed. Yes, it happened. The Rick/Jessie kiss that some people were excitedly waiting for and others were dreading.

I am warming up to Jessie. She’s starting to become more badass and we’re sort of seeing a similar character progression like what we saw in Carol once Ed was out of the picture. But I’m still not a fan of her and Rick together. I’m sorry, don’t attack me, but I just can’t see it. I don’t ship it guys, not yet. Maybe I’ll be convinced as the series goes on, but not right now.

Rick and Jessie

However, I do have to applaud Alexandra Breckridge who said on Talking Dead she was a little worried about the kiss because she knows how the fans of the show are when it comes to Rick being with basically any female.

She really doesn’t need to worry though. I’d say majority of the fandom may not like the character, but we usually love the actor/actress who plays them. Lori for example. Couldn’t stand Lori, think Sarah Wayne Callies is awesome and seen a bunch of her other stuff just cause she’s in it.

This really was such a great episode. So much stuff happened, so much character progression and insanity and oh my gosh I can’t wait to see what happens tonight!

We’re going to find out what happens to Abraham and Sasha and it looks like there will be a lot of Daryl in this episode so I’m very excited.

Let me know what you thought of “Now” and give me your predictions for tonight!

Did you like the Jessie/Rick kiss? How about Tara/Denise?
