The Walking Dead Episode Review: “The Next World”

The Walking Dead

You know, every week I think, “The Walking Dead can’t get any better”. Then Sunday roles around, they air the next episode, and, oh what do you know? It got better!

“The Next World” is set two months after the mid-season premier and we see right away that things in Alexandria are changing. Everyone has settled down and is making lives for themselves.

In this episode we see Rick and Daryl going on what they’re hoping will be a successful run for supplies. However, in typical Walking Dead fashion things don’t go as planned. At first the run seems to be going great, better than great in fact.

Rick and Daryl find a giant truck full of food and other resources, but as they continue scouting out the area they run (quite literally) into a man named Jesus. Well, Paul, but his friends call him Jesus.

Long story short,: Jesus steals the truck, Rick and Daryl get the truck back, Jesus ends up on the roof of the truck, Rick flings him off, Daryl chases him around a field, the truck ends up at the bottom of a lake, Rick and Daryl bring Jesus back to Alexandria to find out more about where he’s from.

This entire episode was gold. Right from the start there was so much humour and so much bromance. Rick and Daryl are going on their un and as they’re driving down the road Rick decides to put on some music. Evidently he’s done this before cause Daryl literally begs him not to put on the CD and I can’t say I blame him as the music Rick puts on is so typically Rick it’s ridiculous (and hilarious).

Something else I found hilarious in the first several minutes of the episode are Daryl’s interaction with Denise and Rick and Daryl’s interaction with Eugene. First of all, the whole thing between Daryl and Denise is adorable as she’s asking him to get pop for Tara (as a surprise) and Daryl’s response? “The hell’s pop?” Despite this, he makes it a mission to get the ‘pop’ for her, but unfortunately that doesn’t go as planned either.

Both these conversations were fantastic and Rick and Daryl’s faces both times were hilarious! I couldn’t stop laughing.

However, it wasn’t long before that laughing turned into swearing at my TV when Jesus came along. Now, I would like to say that I haven’t read enough of the comics yet to have met this character, but I knew he was coming cause everyone was talking about it. However, up until Sunday night I’d been pronouncing it ‘Hey-Zeus” and now I’m really curious how he got the name Jesus.

I’m also really curious as to why he’s such an ass and how he got so good and kicking ass. Rick doesn’t trust him at first (he’s too clean) and Daryl instantly doesn’t like him, but Rick wants to give him a chance.

I really liked the parallels here to Season 5B when the group first met Aaron. They didn’t trust him because he was too clean and that time it was Rick who wanted nothing to do with him and the others who thought they should give him a chance.

Daryl and Jesus

They ended up bringing Jesus back to Alexandria in order to find out more about him, but that also doesn’t go as planned and he escapes his ‘cell’ I guess you’d call it and breaks into Rick’s house (I’ll get to what he interrupted in a few minutes).

Can I just ask though, where the eff is Daryl when he breaks into the house? Rick said Daryl was guarding him so obviously Jesus didn’t just slip past Daryl and escape, so where is he?

Alright, before I get to what was probably the biggest event of the night, I want to talk about Carl, Spencer, and Deanna. Michonne sees Spencer leaving Alexandria and heading into the woods by himself. She follows him, despite his protests, and is there when he is forced to put down his mother. She is also there to see Carl (who had been out in the woods with Enid) lead Deanna right to Spencer.

At first I thought, “Oh great, Carl lost his eye and now he’s back to being a lil’ shit like in season two”, but no, that wasn’t the case at all. After she confronts him, Carl reveals to Michonne that he did what he did because Spencer needed the closure. Just like Carl killed Lori, Spencer needed to be the one to put down Deanna.

He also says that he would do it for her. He says that if Michonne were to turn he would put her down because that’s what family does. In a weird and slightly creepy way that was really sweet. Families used to do things for each other like shovel the driveway or pick up the dry-cleaning, now they shoot each other in the head.

Alright, are you ready? Are you sure? Cause I’m not. I’m not ready. Oh wait a minute, yes I am. I’ve been ready for several seasons now.

RICHONNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It happened guys! It happened! Rick and Michonne did the do!

Shippers (and non-shippers) everywhere were squealing both literally and technologically from the moment Rick handed Michonne those mints. No this was not a hint that she has bad breath, but was rather a substitute for the toothpaste he wasn’t able to save from the lake truck.

Now, I ship a lot of the characters on this show. I’m a fanfiction writer, it’s what I do. However, I normally know that my ships will never be canon, they will only exist in the fanfiction and fandom world. But not anymore (at least not with this ship)!

Richonne is canon!

I can’t even tell you how happy I am. It was so sweet and so wonderful and they kissed and next thing we knew they were naked in bed. Granted, Jesus then broke in and scared them both, but still. The moment had already happened which means Jesus ruined nothing and Richonne was happy!

I’m so glad this finally happened (can you tell?). Rick, Michonne, Carl, and Judith have been like their own mini family within Team Family for ages now anyway and now they just made it official.

So much happened on Sunday night! Walker Deanna, Rickyl Bromance, Richonne, and more! Next week looks intense with Jesus possibly leading the group to his camp and I am so excited.

What did you guys think of “The Next World”? What was your favourite part?
