A great day for Team Canada. Meagan and Eric’s performance was absolutely stunning, I couldn’t take my eyes away from the screen. Tessa and Scott, as always, were amazing. Every time I watch both couple perform I’m just in awe of what they can do and both confused and amazed as to how they do.

Katelyn Osmond did a fantastic job in the ladies single skate. Coming in third and earning 8 points for Canada, she’s definitely someone I’ll be watching more of.

The excitement continues tomorrow on Day 3 with the Mens Single Free Skate, Women’s Single Free Skate, and the Ice Dance Free Dance!

PyeongChang 2018 – Figure Skating Day 1

PyeongChang 2018

Day one and the Olympics were already well underway.

One of the first events to take place was the first half of the Figure Skating Team Event, featuring the men’s short program and the pairs short program.

There were many amazing performances and some unfortunate stumbles, but all in all every athlete brought their best.

There are two aspects to the scoring in figure skating, Technical Elements and Presentation. Points are awarded based on the performance (jumps, step sequence, etc.) and are based on the level of difficulty (4 spins will earn more than 2 spins) and how well the move is carried out. Deductions can be made for falls.

For a more detailed explanation on how the scoring and judging works, check out this article from the Washington Post.

At the end of the first day of skating it was a close competition with overall points ranking each country close behind each other.

Super proud of Team Canada for both their performances. Patrick Chan took a couple stumbles, but he recovered quick and continued on like nothing happened. Meaghan and Eric did an amazing job during the pair’s short program, I thought it was a beautiful number and the two of them moved so in sync it was wonderful.

Despite a few falls here and there, you could tell every skater was bringing their A Game and I’m sure we’ll see more of this determination in the coming days.

The pairs skate continued today, February 11th and I’ll be posting my recap for that tomorrow. Among the skaters will be Tessa and Scott, representing Team Canada for the Ice Dance Short and I can’t wait to see what happens.

PyeongChang 2018 Opening Ceremony

PyeongChang 2018.jpg

What a truly remarkable sight. All the countries, the athletes, and the amazing performances all coming together to form the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.

This is my first year really being pumped up about the Olympics and after watching the Opening Ceremony I’m a little disappointed in myself for not catching up sooner.

There was some beautiful performances from dancers, puppeteers, singers, and more with five children leading the ceremony. Over 2000 performers were involved in this aspect of the ceremony focusing on the message of peace and unity.

The Parade of Nations is of the course the big moment everyone waits for in the Opening Ceremony and it surely did not disappoint. Leading the charge was Greece, a custom I learned is due to them hosting the original Olympics. Bringing up the rear was South Korea, the host country. The other countries came out in alphabetical order according to the name of the country in the Korean language. This was a fact I found really fascinating as I had no clue what order they were meant to be coming out in.

There were many stand out moments during the opening ceremony, from North and South Korea announcing they would be competing under a united flag to Russia competing under an unaffiliated flag after the doping scandal. On a lighter note, Team America entered the circle to Psy’s, “Gangnam Style”, the flag bearer from Tonga came out shirtless (wasn’t he cold?!), and Team Bermuda came out wearing Bermuda shorts.

Of course, the moment everyone was truly waiting for was the lighting of the cauldron. Several torch bearers carried the torch around the circle, the final two runners being a representative of North Korea and South Korea, until finally it was at the top. From there, South Korean figure skater, Yuna Kim, took over in the lighting of the cauldron. It was truly a sight to behold.

I can’t wait to see what happens during the Games and I’ll be following the Figure Skating closely. So closely in fact that I’ll have a post up soon about the results of the Figure Skating Team Event: Men’s Single Skate and Short Program from the 9th.

Are there any sports you’re especially excited about? How closely do you follow the Olympics?

Dancing With the Stars Week Six: “A Night at the Movies” Recap

Dancing with the Stars S25 Cast

This week on DWTS the couples were off to the movies!

The scoring this week was out of 40 as the regular judges were joined by special guest judge, Shania Twain.

Each couple was assigned a film genre and had to come up with a dance that both incorporated the ballroom style they were given and that genre.

Each dance was interesting and incorporated the genre they were given in a unique and creative way.

Something else that was unique and creative (and quite controversial) was Shania Twain’s performance mid-way through the show. There is a lot of critique about her entire appearance during week six, but what I’m talking about is when she got up to perform her song “Soldier”.

Now, I’m no expert, but I work in a music store. And during her performance she sounded exactly (like scarily so) like the recording of that song that is on her new album. I’m not saying for sure whether or not she lip synced, but something about the whole performance was definitely off.

Moving on to nicer and less controversial performances, here are the scores from Monday night:

The competition is continuing to heat up the further into it we get and every dancer brought their A-game this week.

Unfortunately, there still had to be an elimination. Throughout the course of the night it was announced which couples were safe and which ones were in jeopardy.

Initially in jeopardy this week: Nick & Peta; Victoria & Val; Terrell & Cheryl.

The last couple called to be called safe was Victoria & Val, leaving Terrell & Cheryl and Nick & Peta in jeopardy.

The couple eliminated in week six was Nick and Peta.

Nick & Peta.jpg

Sad to see them go, though I think after all the weeks of them being in jeopardy and scraping by we knew it was going to come. Nick brought a lot of fun to the competition and we all know this won’t be the last we see of him. It’s safe to say he’ll be in the audience every week now to cheer on Vanessa.

Which dance was your favourite? Is the couple you’re rooting for still in the running?

In Jeopardy this week were Sasha & Gleb and Frankie & Witney, two couples I don’t think anyone was expecting to end up on that list at this point in the competition.

Sadly, it was Sasha & Gleb who were eliminated.
