The Fosters Episode Review: “Lucky”

The Fosters

Season 3 | Episode 10 | Aired August 17, 2015

The mid-season finale is here! How did we get to this point already? It seems like just yesterday season three was just starting and now we have to wait several months before the next episode!

You know what though? I’m actually okay with that because last night’s episode ended on a happy note.

End

Despite everything that happened last week between Brandon and Callie, Callie’s social worker actually went ahead and recommended Callie’s adoption (finally!). Stef and Lena are dealing with the fallout of everything that happened with Monte, all while throwing an anniversary party for Lena’s parents. And after being caught in a compromising position by Connor’s dad, Connor announces that he’s moving to Los Angeles to live his mother. With several surprising twists and appearances by unexpected characters, the mid-season finale was non-stop drama from start to finish.

Let’s start with Stef and Lena. Still on the rocks over Lena’s kiss with Monte, the couple still went ahead with Lena’s parent’s anniversary party. While the couple tried to pretend like everything was normal and fine, they each had their own circumstances to deal with that I think definitely helped them get back together.

Lena learned a lesson in forgiveness when her mother invited Nathan to the party and she realized that, while there’s no excuse for what he said, he isn’t that same kid anymore. Nathan apologized to Lena and their parents and it was definitely an emotional scene to watch.

While all this is going on, Stef is dealing with a medical crisis when she gets a call to come in and have a second mammogram done, a call no woman ever wants to get. Thankfully she’s fine, but the moment she told Lena there might’ve been something wrong was heartbreaking.

Stef and Lena

This scene, from start to finish, was so incredibly emotional because it’s one of those things that I reckon many people can either relate to or fear. Fighting with someone you love and then one of you has a health scare? It’s a terrifying thought and I’m definitely thankful and happy that Stef is fine cause I don’t think I could’ve dealt with it if she wasn’t.

Two people who weren’t fine at first, but ended up okay were Jude and Connor. I knew something was going to happen with them this week because it was in the Wikipedia description. However, the Wiki description got changed so many times I wasn’t sure which one was true (though I was fairly certain it wasn’t that Jude got Connor pregnant).

Turns out two of the Wiki descriptions were correct. Jude and Connor were caught in a compromising position (not all that compromising) by Connor’s dad and Connor decided he wanted to go live with his mom in LA.

Connors Dad

This whole thing was both incredibly sad and hilarious. Sad because Connor is leaving and Jude really doesn’t understand why at first. I think Jude and Connor are definitely two of the most mature teens I’ve ever seen, both on TV and in real life, since by the end of the episode they handled it so maturely.

It was hilarious because Lena ended up giving Jude “The Talk”. His face was fantastic and this was once again one of those moments where I imagined the actors getting the script. It’s an awkward and hilarious situation getting “The Talk” in real life from your real parents, I don’t know how either of them were able to keep a straight face, especially when she pulled out the condom.

Before I end this Jonnor rant, fans were very excited last night because, as the boys were handling their imminent separation with maturity some adults do not possess, they said “I love you.” I could practically hear every Jonnor fan around the world screaming. It was adorable and romantic and these boys should not have this much control over my emotions, but guess what? They do.

Jude Loves Connor

I know Connor is leaving, but I’m very excited to see what happens in the next half of the season. After all, “they have trains”, right?

Connor Loves Jude

Alright, probably the biggest storyline of the night was Callie’s adoption. It happened! Callie Jacob is now, officially, Callie Adams-Foster! I was so incredibly happy, both because it finally happened and because now her adoption getting delayed can stop being a plot point.

It almost didn’t happen though, and not even because of Brandon. It almost didn’t happen because of the video Callie made for “Fost and Found” where she called out the judge on her case by name. The judge was, understandably, upset about this, but Callie wouldn’t back down.

This might actually have been my favourite Callie moment of the entire series. She knew by standing up for what she believed in could mean not getting adopted, but she did anyway. Why? Because someone has to. Someone has to speak up and she’s going to be the one to do it.

When she was saying this all the other characters were looking so proud and so happy with what Callie was saying and I was right there with them. I have so much respect for people who stand up for their beliefs and for the sake of others even if it means possibly jeopardizing themself and their future.

Thankfully, it seems this is how the judge felt as well as he told Callie he was proud of her right before signing off on her adoption.

Woooooo! It’s finally happened! Callie is adopted! However, now there is a fear of what is going to happen next.

I gave my theory last week and after looking on Twitter it seems a lot of people share this theory. Callie told the judge that there was nothing to stop her getting adopted. Awesome, great, now she’s adopted. But is she pregnant?

Callie slept with Brandon

A lot of fans are speculating that now she’s been adopted it might be revealed that Callie is pregnant after her night spent with Brandon and that’ll definitely complicate things. I guess we’ll just have to wait until The Fosters returns.

Speaking of returns, Jesus is back! Now being played by Noah Centineo, Jesus surprised his family after Callie’s adoption and revealed secretly to Mariana that he can’t go back to his boarding school. Of course we didn’t find out why, that’ll be told sometime when the show returns. But for now, Jesus is back!

Jesus!

Welcome to the cast of The Fosters Noah Centineo! I’m looking forward to seeing his take on Jesus and where the character will go now.

Emotions were running high last night all through the episode, from Lena’s parent’s wedding anniversary party to the potential end of Jonnor, things were crazy. Thankfully, “Lucky” ended on a happy note with the whole family together at last. I’m sad we have to wait several months for the next episode, but am glad the mid-season finale didn’t end on any horrifying cliff hangers.

The Fosters Episode Review: “Deja Vu”

The Fosters

Season 3 | Episode 3 | Aired June 22, 2015

I love this show. I know I’ve said it before, but I really need to say it again because it’s true. The Fosters does stuff that other shows don’t and they don’t care about what happens after because they know what they’re showing is making a positive impact for someone somewhere. This episode was no different.

Tensions were building this week as secrets came closer and closer to being revealed. Callie’s still hiding the fact that she was fired from her placement from her parents, Lena’s still hiding the kiss with Monte, and Mariana hasn’t told anyone else that she slept with Wyatt. We also saw this week that Jude is hiding his fear and anxiety that he’s been feeling ever since Connor got shot and as for AJ, well, we don’t know what all his secrets are yet, but we know he has a lot of them.

Mike and AJ spent some time bonding this week over baseball, though it wasn’t all fun and games as Brandon doesn’t trust AJ and is worried his dad is going to get played. These worries seem to be well placed as last AJ stole Brandon’s baseball and ran away. They found him and he returned the ball, but I still don’t trust him.

AJ

There’s just something really sketchy about him and his “brother” who we have yet to meet that I’m just having a hard time believing anything he says.

Meanwhile, Mariana is getting closer to her biological family who have given her a job at their bakery. After a bit of arguing and a lot of pushing, Mariana convinces her grandfather to move away from tradition and sell a new food at the bakery to help raise their sales. She also seems to be getting closer to Wyatt who has been texting her which will probably cause a problem when the band returns from their tour next week.

Another major plot point in last night’s episode was Jude and Connor who are both dealing with Connor getting shot in their own way. Jude’s solution? Go with Stef to the shooting range. Stef agrees to take him and Connor, but once there Jude decides he doesn’t want to shoot the gun because he doesn’t need to. Connor shoots once and it becomes apparent than he isn’t handling the shooting as well as he thought.

Jonnor

Anyone who has read my previous reviews knows I’m a huge sucker for Jonnor and I know a lot of other people are too. I’m so glad they’re focusing so much on these two and it’s not just some side thing, but there’s actual plotlines and things happening. I loved the interactions in last night’s episode and thought the way they handled both Jude and Connor’s feelings towards what had happened and the way Stef handled it was fantastic. There’s a handbook for pretty much everything these days and there are so many who will tell you what to do in certain situations with your kids. However, I don’t think there’s a handbook yet on what to do when your child gets shot/almost gets shot so I thought how they dealt with it was great.

Finally, the other big thing that happened was Lena and Stef introducing Monte to their friend Jenna after Stef sees Monte at a gay bar. This causes a bit of a problem as now that Monte may not actually be straight, she might be bi. Before we go any further, I would just like to say how amazing I thought this was.

They have a lesbian couple, a gay couple, straight couples, single parents, biracial characters, biracial couples. They deal with homophobia, racism (which seems to be a huge topic next week), bullying, and so much more. Now they have a possibly bisexual character/a character struggling with their sexual orientation. This is one of those times where I truly loved The Fosters.

Lena and Stef

Anyways, back to the review. Lena is now feeling more guilt over the fact that they kissed, but Monte tells her she didn’t do anything wrong as Lena technically didn’t kiss back so Stef doesn’t really need to know. Really? Really? Stef doesn’t need to know? When does that ever end well?! Oh right, it doesn’t!

No, come on Lena, tell Stef what happened. It’ll suck, but it’s better to be honest about it than wait and have her find out some other way which we all know is going to happen.

“Deja Vu” was a great episode. I could literally feel the tension in each character and you can tell that they’re building to something big. All these secrets are going to come out and there’s just going to be a massive explosion. The only question is when is this going to happen?

What did you think of “Deja Vu”? Did you have a favourite part? What do you think is going to happen next?

Season two ended horrifically when the twins were involved in a car accident that had “reported fatalities”. As it had already been reported that Jake T. Austin (Jesus) would not be returning for season three, many viewers were left to wonder whether that meant Jesus had died or if he was going off to boarding school.

Well, it was revealed tonight that the twins were fine, Ana was fine, and Anna’s baby was fine. Jesus went off to boarding school and Ana has been taking care of baby Isabella with Marianna’s help (though she doesn’t seem thrilled about it). However, not everyone moved on quite so easily.

Stef has been trying to find the driver of the other vehicle and it becomes apparent that she’s having a really tough time dealing with everything. Can’t really blame her though, she heard there were reported fatalities and then got to the scene to realize her children were in one of the cars.

Stef and Lena

Also at the end of last season we saw Monte kiss Lena and that was just a terribly awkward situation. They both said this episode that it meant nothing, but considering Stef still doesn’t know it happened, I think it’s a safe assumption this isn’t over yet.

Things got even better for the couple when, right after deciding to go away for a while, the ceiling exploded.

Ceiling

Marianna has been spending her time since the accident helping Ana care for baby Isabella. It becomes apparent immediately to viewers that Ana isn’t thrilled about this whole thing, though it isn’t clear why. She eventually ends up just tells Marianna that she needs some time to herself with the baby and tells Marianna to go have fun at the end of year school party.

Marianna boyfriend

Marianna goes with the intentions of sleeping with her boyfriend before he goes off on tour. This decision seemed to come from two places: she’s worried he’ll sleep with other girls on tour and forget her, and she’s upset about Ana. Needless to say, she doesn’t end up sleeping with her boyfriend as he says no. She does end up sleeping with Wyatt and oh my goodness I don’t want to know where this is going.

Tonight we also saw that Callie is still working at the youth centre for foster kids where she meets AJ. She ends up making a seriously bad decision and allows AJ to sleep at the centre. I was really hopeful that AJ might turn out to be a good guy (despite what we saw in the commercials), but after he steals some spray paint and Callie ends up getting fired, I don’t think we can really believe anything that he says. Now I’m wondering if any of what he said is actually true or a made up sob story.

Callie and Aj

Brandon has started at Idyllwild Music School, but he’s not a pianist, he’s a composer. He ends up getting paired with Kat, a girl who has been going to the school for five years and thinks incredibly highly of herself. However, Brandon isn’t backing down and steps up to his role as composer, refusing to let Kat get to him. Now, I’ve always been a bit iffy about Brandon just cause there was that whole situation with him and Callie that lasted way too long. However, I think I’m going to like him this season! He’s already sassing people so he gets points for that.

Brandon the Composer

Finally, Jude. Not gonna lie, the first thing I noticed is how much taller he is and how much deeper his voice is. I know Hayden Byerly is about fourteen, but I hadn’t actually realized how much he’d grown up until I rewatched a couple episodes from season one the other day. He sounds so different! And he’s no longer below Callie’s shoulders!

Alright, moving on. I think everyone was super excited at the end of season two when Jude told Callie that Connor was his boyfriend. Well tonight we saw that Jude was pretty reluctant to tell people. Everyone ended up finding out anyway when a girl at school told people in an attempt to help.

Jonner

*Pause here for a second. Please, if you know someone who is anywhere on the LGBTQ+ spectrum and hasn’t come out yet, don’t help them by outing them. They will come out when they’re ready so please don’t do this. Help them by not outing them.*

Jude reveals to Connor that he does like him and he does want to be his boyfriend, he just doesn’t want to be labeled as he’s been labeled his whole life. You really can’t argue with that. Jude and Connor ended up holding hands and I will admitted that I was very happy and excited about this as they’re far too adorable together.

Jonnor

Tonight’s episode was a rollercoaster of emotions so we started off the season in typical The Fosters style. Immediately each of the characters has been thrown into some sort of turmoil. This is why we can’t have nice things!

What did you think of the season premier?
